Op-Ed: There's Something Distasteful About Those McCain-Palin Rallies
Recently, there have been reports of overzealous people shouting at Senator McCain to fight back at Senator Obama. But, the really disturbing trend starting to take shape is the fact that people have begun using racial slurs to get their overzealous points across.
Now, take into account the fact that those reports and images are transmitted and online for the world to watch. Its no wonder that other countries feel no remorse for the situation we dug ourselves in. U.S. citizens are supposed to be people of progress not people of regression. So far those angry, overzealous people have proved that we, the United States, are a nation of: racists, ignorance, denial and suffering from Munchausen Syndrome. And apparently most citizens of the United States also has short-term memory. All of this recalls to mind that famous line President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our Thirty-Second President, said at his Inaugural speech: "...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
I admit watching 20/20 last night and John Stossel's segment on who should/shouldn't vote. At first, my reaction was, "this is stupid" but later on, he did bring up a good point about voters in general. It does seem that people can change their decision by the time they reach the voting booth. Better yet, it seems that more undecided voters will decide who will become the next President of the United States. I don't want to sound like I'm dignifying Stossel's segment. Truthfully, I always found him to be a reporter who likes to sensationalize his subjects. But, as more and more people start to see the dividing line between the two candidates, it doesn't take a genius to realize that undecided voters will tend to go for someone who can make the nation become better. At least look better. When angry, town mob-like rallies start to taint your campaign footage, you know that you have a serious image problem and that there is no way for people to think twice about the attitudes and ideals of the people supporting that candidate.
The United States is still a great nation. Its just a nation populated by miscreants. We're supposed to be a nation trying to change things for the better. But watching and hearing those McCain-Palin rallies makes me think otherwise. Yes, people are angry and are entitled to voice their anger. And yes, we do have the First Amendment to uphold. But, I think people could and should do better than what we've seen so far. It seems that the social ills that Mark Twain wrote about centuries ago still plague this country.
