Women-Only Subway Cars (aka Anti-Groping Subway Cars)

There seem to be more stories about "women-only" subway cars cropping up these days. I know Tokyo did a trial run (or is planning to do a trial run) of a women-only subway car for one of their JR lines. But now this story from Seoul, Korea was just released by Reuters and it got me thinking about all those subway and Path rides I take around NJ & Manhattan. Yes, I was groped while riding the Path one night from NY heading back to NJ. The car was packed and sadly there were way too many young drunk professionals riding along. Unfortunately, I ended up standing next to some guy who must've poured Chivas Regal all over his clothes because he simply reaked of it. And the next thing I knew, I felt a hand grab my rear end and I jumped forward only to push another person in front of me. I knew it was that drunk bastard who touched me and I wanted to punch him but I didn't have enough room to turn and deck him. Instead I just turned and glared at his bloodshot eyes and made him regret that he ever wanted to reach for my rear end. He knew I was staring him down (people who know me know about my "death stare" - its the kind that makes people cower over and denies them the chance to look up and stare me straight in the face). He did give a half-assed apology where I only kept staring and shook my head in silence. I did not want to exchange words with a drunkard. That would be considered a waste of good words.

Anyway, that happend about four or five years ago. But it seems that groping on trains and subways is still prevalent and is encouraging a new way of thinking among transit systems worldwide. It would be very interesting if New York's MTA would consider womens-only subway cars. But then I realized that it would take away the unique ridership that is the New York subway system. Sure there are creepy people who jump on board and wack-off at the sight of a pretty woman. I've heard stories from friends who have been the object of one's wack-off desires. But what really makes the New York subway ridership unique from other major cities is the fact that most of the female ridership is fiercly independent. Plus, it kinda sends the wrong signal about riding a NY subway - like its dangerous or something. Ever since they started that "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign, its interesting how that phrase actually encourages people to be more vigilant than usual.

Forthcoming Goldfrapp album title confirmed - Seventh Tree

Ahhhh Goldfrapp. How I adore thee. Alison and Will are quite the musicians and I can't stress how really excited I am to this news that was just confirmed on their website today. Here's the email they sent out to their fans:

Brand New Album: "Seventh Tree"
Released On 25th February 2008

Howdy Deers

And without further ado, we can reveal the news that you have all been waiting for... exclusively announced here for the very first time...

We are very pleased and proud to announce that Goldfrapp will release their fourth album, Seventh Tree, through Mute on 25th February 2008. Seventh Tree is written and produced by Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and was recorded at their own studio deep in the English countryside.

A sensual counterpoint to the glitterball glamour of Supernature, Seventh Tree is gilded in the butterfly colours of an English surrealism shared from Lear to Lennon. It shimmers and shines with the warmth of a hazy summer, an electric whirlpool over which Alison's glistening voice soars.

Alison and Will say, "We can't wait for you to hear what we've been doing. It comes from the heart and was made with love, so we hope you will be into it too."

We'll let you know the track listing and get you a sneaky peak of the album artwork just as soon as we can. Naturally you'll be the first to know.

Let the fun begin...

Lots of love and wrap up warm

Deer

PS Hello, hola, bonjour, salut to all the new members that have joined us recently. We hope that you have found a happy home here.

You gotta check out the website. Nice Flash work. Click on "Slideshow" to see pics from the studio and Alison's POV. I would love to swap photo books with her one day. That's a cool thing to have on my coffee table.

Weird Bollywood Music Video

UNKLE - Webster Hall, NYC -- CMJ 2007 Music Marathon

All photos by Amanda Nanawa

Thursday night at Webster Hall in New York City, I had a chance to watch UK group UNKLE perform for the very first time to a NY audience.
Being that the show was part of the CMJ Music Marathon showcase, I knew that the show would most likely run for about 2 hrs. You know, UNKLE has released only three full-length albums since 1998 starting with Psyence Fiction (which I proudly own on vinyl) and the album featured some great guest vocalists from Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and Mike D among others. It was the album that featured the morose "Rabbit in Your Headlights" and mesmerizing "Lonely Soul". Then in 2003 Never, Never Land was released and that had guest vocalists from Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) to Robert Del Naja (Massive Attack). That album featured songs such as "Eye for an Eye" and "Be There". And this past July, War Stories was released and continued to feature guest vocals from Ian Astbury, The Duke Spirit, Josh Homme, Autolux and finally by James Lavelle - one of UNKLE's founding members.

Two bands opened for UNKLE. The first was Chicago's Walter Meego
while the second band was Toronto's own Holy Fuck. I enjoyed both bands. Holy Fuck has that song "Safari" that sounds like samples from '80s video games thanks to those mini Casio synths that they used to sell at Toys 'R Us for something like $50 bucks.

For the UNKLE show, I was curious to see which guest vocalist would make their appearance. It turned out that Ian Astbury, famously known as the lead singer of The Cult - newly reformed may I add, was the only one. Apparently, Richard Ashcroft was supposed to be there to do his "Lonely Soul" song but Ian ended up singing it.
I give him kudos for doing the song. I could tell that he wasn't comfortable singing it. In fact, he missed out on the first few lines of the song. James Lavelle was about to help sing the song when Ian got up to speed. I had a weird feeling that Ian had the lyrics of the song cupped in his hand because he kept the mic and right hand pretty damn close to his mouth.

Most of the songs performed last night were from War Stories.
For their encore, they did "Eye for an Eye" and "Rabbit in Your Headlights" (no Thom BTW). It was funny how at the end, James would tell the crowd (which apparently had David Bowie in attendance in the VIP balcony - at least that's what I heard) that he appreciated everyone coming out to watch UNKLE live -- the venue was packed -- and he went into a diatribe about how Richard (we can only assume Ashcroft) failed to appear on stage. Oh well.

Viva la CMJ!

Radiohead In Rainbows - One Hell of a Sensual Release

I gave myself about three days before I finally decided to download In Rainbows. I wanted to see what kind of chatter would appear on websites and what kind of reviews would come out of listeners. It wasn't until this past Sunday when I saw a headline about how the lyrics of In Rainbows allude to sex and death. I was sold on that. I did end up paying the 10 songs for $2.98 US. I consider this more like an advance copy and just leaving a tip with the band. I do plan to get the physical hard vinyl version which is very expensive - $80.00 US.

So I listened to this album for three days. I listened to it Sunday night and loved it at first play-through. I continued playing it over and over until I went to sleep. Monday morning, I'm on the train heading to NYC for a meeting and on the way I listen to the album. Playing the songs while riding the train made the experience more sensual. I was starting to take notice of the lyrics. Was it possible? Does Thom Yorke actually get more personal with the lyrics and delves deeper into the interaction of humans by way of sexual attraction? Could it be that I'm hearing lyrics that incite a love affair? Or lyrics of seduction? Wait, have you heard the lyrics on "House of Cards" where he's crooning things like "I don't wanna be your friend, I just want to be your lover"? I really started loving the album. I find it interesting that no one, except for Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers, writes about the album's sensual leanings. Instead, most of the blogosphere just writes about the mechanics of the album and how it compares to previous Radiohead releases. So sad. And on Tuesday I drove to/from Philly and listened to this album over and over. 10 songs only adds up to something close to 45min listening time. Definitely not enough for a 2 hour drive.

Anyway, I think this is Radiohead's most sensual (in a creepy sorta way) release. Are there weak tracks? No. And if other critics, fans, jerks tell you the album has a weak track - then they were not listening.

P.S. Some people actually paid $200 for the 10 songs.

Davide Rossi digs my photo

While checking out my MySpace page, I clicked on Goldfrapp's page to see what's up. Besides the news that Goldfrapp is planning to release their yet-to-be-titled forthcoming release by year end or early next year, I wanted to see what else was happening. Lo and behold, I recognize a pic that I took during the Nokia Theatre Times Square show in NYC and its being used by Davide Rossi, Goldfrapp's session player and on-road violinist/keytarist. I am so honored. I think its cool that Davide Rossi's camp likes the photo. And to use it as the page's avatar to boot! Yay!

Chocolate Rain & some SNL shorts

C'mon...You've probably heard of this phenomenal song and the guy (boy?) who wrote, plays and sings the tune. Its such a bad song that it practically caught fire on You Tube. I'm sure it was already written about here somewhere by another blogger but hell, why not talk about the song again?

The original by Tay Zonday:

And his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel this past summer:

And here's a cover of the song in 8bit:

Chad Vader gets into doing a cover of the song:

And last but not least, John Mayer (really?) apparently does a "crappy" cover:

Now on to SNL. I haven't been watching SNL for almost an entire year. And then recently, I read in one of the newsletters I get from Cynopsis that SNL plans to re-post the short that pokes fun at Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his remarks at the UN Council where he denies the existence of gays in Iran.

And a spoof on High School Musical:

Enjoy!
