Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" on Ergo Proxy

Radiohead's song, "Paranoid Android," (Ok Computer), was used as temp music for the opening credits from Manglobe's latest project Ergo Proxy. Manglobe produced Samurai Champloo which is currently airing on Cartoon Network's [adult swim].
After the band saw clips and trailers of Ergo Proxy, they thought it was best that their music stayed in the opening credits. And there you have it! Another satisfied anime customer.

Glitter Pays Up, Things to Look Forward to in 2006

Week of December 26 - 30, 2005

Happy New Year!!!!

Gary Glitter Pays His Way Out of Death
In order to lessen his punishment (or at least to avoid death), Gary Glitter had paid some of the victims' families a "compensation" for distress and grief. Happy New Year Gary Glitter!

The Future
So, this will actually be a short entry since I have no freaking clue what to really look forward to in 2006. I mean, I can try and give you a few pointers. That might actually work. So, here's a few:

- Supernature, Goldfrapp
I know I sound like an overzealous fan, but seriously, if you haven't bought the import version in the US, you may want to wait just three months longer for the official US release of the album. The US version would most likely have some extra stuff that isn't on the import version (one can only hope). But, do see them live. Watching Alison live is definitely the top of my list for 2006.

- SxSW
I can tell this will be a good year at SxSW. I may attend the music conference for a show I am currently pre-producing (we're shooting pilot eps at the festival).

- Summer Movies
X-Men 3, Superman Returns, The Da Vinci Code... this is a summer worth waiting for.

- Anime Expo and Comic-Con
Hell yeah! I produced several segments that aired on Comcast's Anime Selects. I hope to do the same in 2006.

- New York Comic-Con
Super hell yeah! I'll be there. And perhaps with crew.

That's it for now. I have to get ready to ring in the New Year. I'll reveal more about a new show I am currently pre-producing once all the logistics are in place. The show will be tied to this blog in some way.

Have a safe, healthy and happy New Year!

Beckinsale Striptease, Miyazaki Looks Golden, Cat Power "The Greatest", Duncan Sheik Tours, Goro Miyazaki

Week of December 12 - 16

Beckinsale's Private Dancing
This has nothing to do with music or anime. But, it caught my attention because the quotes from the Playboy interview just kept begging me to read them. And plus, sex does sell.

NY Film Critics Circle Awards
The New York Film Critics Circle has awarded Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle Best Animated Feature. That should be a good indicator on the Oscar radar.

...And While We're on Miyazaki...

Nausicaa.net announced this week that their next effort will be Gedo Senki (Gedo War History) and will be directed by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao's son. This would be his directorial debut. Gedo Senki is adapted from Ursula K. Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea from the Earthsea book series. But don't think Goro's father was pleased with this project. Apparently, Hayao has expressed displeasure over the fact that his son is directing.
Here's an excerpt from Goro's blog:

2005 December 13th Introductory message - "My father was against this"

This may sound abrupt , but my father (Hayao Miyazaki) was against me directing Gedo Senki. However, first I would like to make something clear. To be honest I never desired to open a diary on the Internet and come out in front of everybody. If I had something that I wanted to tell with my own voice, it would be, "I want you to watch the work I have completed", that's all. My desire as a director is to "have people watch Gedo Senki with direct feelings and no idle thoughts", that's all.

Cat Power The Greatest
I'm pretty damn excited about Chan's newest effort The Greatest. I didn't realize it until last night that almost 10 years ago, Chan made her debut at SxSW at Liberty Lunch. I can never forget that night. She hardly got through her set. She tried to get through one song and couldn't. She freaked out and ran off the stage. All the while, everyone in the club was asking her to come back. She tried, but then couldn't manage to step back on stage - the fright was too much at that time. Today, she's better but you can still get a glimpse of that fright every now and then.

SxSW Music Short List
This came straight outta blogmate's Matt Dentler's blog. Here are some of the confirmed acts: The Adored, Annie, Arctic Monkeys, Belle and Sebastian, Calexico, Neko Case, Cat Power, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Dashboard Confessional, Death In Vegas, Destroyer, Die! Die! Die!, Dirty Pretty Things, Jorge Drexler, Dr. Spock, The Duke Spirit, The Earlies, Echo & the Bunnymen, Editors, The Eighteenth Day Of May, Elbow, Empire Dogs, Flogging Molly, The Go! Team, Headphones, The Hellacopters, The Like, The Magic Numbers, Magnolia Electric Company, Beth Orton, Peaches, The Plimsouls, Robert Pollard, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Saves the Day, The Secret Machines, Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives, Tarantula A.D., Susan Tedeschi, Towers of London, KT Tunstall, Two Gallants, Tom Verlaine.
Matt got the list off of Pitchfork's site. Hot list, huh?

...Speaking of Which...

Britt Daniel of Spoon will be on an episode of Veronica Mars scheduled to air February 1. And apparently, Stephen King totally loves Spoon. Go here for the lowdown.

Duncan Sheik's White Limousine
I know there are Duncan Sheik fans out there. And I know that you're pretty excited about that two-disc release of White Limousine. Here's the lowdown from livedaily.com:

"White Limousine," Sheik's fifth album of original material, is slated for release on Jan. 24. In a somewhat novel move, the album will be released with two discs; one, labeled "Mine," will include the basic album tracks as Sheik intended them, while the second disc, a DVD labeled "Yours," will include mixable versions of the album's songs, and an installable version of Live software to enable purchasers to make their own remixes of Sheik's songs.

And he hits the road starting Dec 31, 2005 (ringing the New Year with the Sheik!).

Goldfrapp Takes Manhattan, Robbie Williams - Not Gay, Madonna in Japan, Annual Annies, Usher's "In the Mix" Bombed

Week of December 5 - 9

Here's your weekly round-up...Christmas started a little early for yours truly!

NYC Loves Goldfrapp

Fresh off her European tour (and opened for Coldplay in some cities), Alison Goldfrapp and band took the stage at Nokia Theatre Times Square. I wrote two reviews: the first is a terse and palatable review, the second is a more detailed review. Yeah. I'm a fan.

Robbie Williams is Straight
Perhaps if he wasn't flaunting his body so much, we wouldn't have mistaken his beefcake body for that of a gay man. But, who cares at this point, right? The court sided with Robbie Williams and so, let the records show that Robbie Williams is a very straight man.

- And since we're on Robbie Williams...
A German court issued a restraining order against a woman who claimed that she wanted to protect Williams from "supernatural forces". The woman has been ordered not to come within 200 metres (219 yards) of the singer and to stop sending e-mails to him and his management team, said a spokesman for the regional court in Duesseldorf, in western Germany. If she breaches the order, she will be fined 250,000 euros (293,000 dollars).
Ok...what? I'd like to know what that lady meant by "supernatural forces". Is she talking about Pazuzu? You know, the demon that was often referred to in The Exorcist? Or is she talking about his sex life?

UPDATE: The woman was trying to protect Robbie Williams from being abducted by aliens.

Madonna Loves Heated Toilet Seats
I completely understand. God, I need a heated toilet seat now in this frigid weather. But, knowing that this is some part of Madonna's elaborate marketing scheme, people would want to install heated toilet seats very soon. Also, an ingenious way to listen to her latest cd. Yes...sushi, heated toilet seat and Confessions on a Dance Floor. Would you want it any other way?

Usher's In the Mix Flushed
Lion's Gate to Usher...they want their money back. Go here for the skinny.

Annie Awards - Yeah!
"It's peanut butter jelly time!" says Brian from Family Guy. Indeed, peanut butter jelly and the coveted Annie Award (which is like the Oscars, the Emmys, the Golden Globe and Spike TV Video Game awards shows all rolled up into one). I'm so conflicted over who should win. There are three really strong, potential winners - Howl's Moving Castle, Wallace and Grommit and Corpse Bride. But, there could only be one.

Grammy Nominees
Should I care? Should you care? I really don't care, but I know there are people out there who will read this and click on this link to see who the nominees are. I wonder who will win Best Polka? But, hey... the soundtrack to Napoleon Dynamite was nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. Friggin sweet!

Madonna "Frozen" Over Plagiarism, Courtney Love's "Rehab Demos", Anime in Oscar Longlist, Mamoru Oshii's "superlivemation"

Week of November 21 - 25

Happy Black Friday!

I'd figure to list some items that caught my attention and consider this a wrap-up.

Madonna is "Frozen"...
...From using the song ever in Belgium. According to AP, a local judge ruled in favor of a little-known Belgium songwriter who claimed that parts of his song, "Ma Vie Fout L'camp (My Life's Getting Nowhere)," found their way onto Madonna's hit song off of her 1998 release Ray of Light. The songwriter, Salvatore Acquaviva, claimed to have written the song five years earlier.
Hey, so I guess that little quote from Alison Goldfrapp was partially correct. She gets the last laugh as the European press pulls most of those links down from Google.

Courtney Love Has Found the Light
BEFORE

AFTER

Photo: AP

The Superior Court Judge ruled recently that Courtney Love can enroll in an outpatient program. She must still submit to random checks twice a week for drugs and alcohol. She also must continue therapy and avoid any business that primarily sells alcohol. Her probation has been extended to March 2007 and her curfew is at 10 p.m.
On another note, her time in rehab has given her the jolt she needed to get going on a new set of songs. Of course, with a little help from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and songwriter Linda Perry, she has been able to focus on what it is she does best. Here's another tidbit, in her recent interview with The Guardian, she has given her blessing on bands she's really into at the moment. And those lucky bands are (drum roll please): Kings of Leon, Goldfrapp, The Icarus Line, Maximo Park, Ladytron and The Duke Spirit. If there is one part of Love that hasn't been fried, it's her taste in music.

Miyazaki vs Otomo...Maybe
In the Oscar longlist, I see two of Japan's most respected animation filmmakers vying for the Best Animated Feature. In Miyazaki, his name is almost synonymous to Oscar (having already won Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away) while in Otomo, he has been involved in some incredible anime titles such as Akira, Metropolis, Neo-Tokyo and Memories. I had the greatest pleasure of programming Neo-Tokyo on The Anime Network and I urge people to get a chance to watch his works. Put them on your Netflix queue. I hope that once the final nominees are announced Tuesday, January 31, 2006, Miyazaki-san and Otomo-san are included. Ahhh, only in my perfect world.

Casshern
On another note, I hope Dreamworks will release the live-action version of Casshern, which is based on the anime version of Casshan: Robot Hunter. They paid a pretty penny last year to get that film. I'm a little baffled by Dreamworks and their Go Fish Pictures. They say they are serious about adding anime to their animation slate, but as of late, I have yet to see any real proof of that. The last foray into anime theatrical release was Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. And they didn't even bother to do an English dub for North America because it was cost-prohibitive. Hmmm...

Mamoru Oshii reveals Tachigui: The Amazing Lives Of The Fast Food Grifters
Well he doesn't reveal all but he does hint that it is NOT anime. In fact, it's more live-action with some elements of animation used. But he strongly professes that it is not an anime feature. Anyway, the film is based on a novel by Oshii that chronicles the history of "tachigui" - eating fast food in the street without paying. That's all anyone outside Japan knows about this project. But, here's more on what the hell Oshii-san's novel is about.
