As we approach All Hallow's Eve and the culmination of a month of really cool (and spooky) special programming like Enzian's Haunted Swamp and this weekend's Grindhouse Horror midnight movies with rare 35mm screenings of Lucio Fulci's CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (aka GATES OF HELL) and Frank Martin's DOCTOR BUTCHER M.D. (aka ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST), I would be remiss in my duties if we didn't give the October FilmSlam winners their due. This month's showcase for Florida-made shorts drew a nice crowd of about 100 local indie film lovers who awarded Michelle Bretana's BEACHWATCH 1st Place in the October FilmSlam. A comedy about a (self-absorbed) cast reunion of a popular TV show from the 90s, BEACHWATCH now gets an automatic bye into this December's Brouhaha Film & Video Showcase, which in turn could lead it into the Best Of Brouhaha program in this April's 20th annual Florida Film Festival. Kudos also to 2nd Place winner Lamar Williams for THANK YOU FOR CALLING, about a young man in a soul-crushing customer service job at a cable company, and 3rd Place winner Nicole Novaton, for BENEATH THE VEIL, a short doc about the cultural impact of Belly Dancing.
Be sure to join us for the final FilmSlam of 2010 on Sunday, November 14 at 1:00 PM. That'll also be the perfect time to say goodbye to longtime FilmSlam Producer/Host, John Theisen, and think him for his many years of service and passion for Central Florida's local film community. Great job, John--you'll be missed! But have no fear FilmSlam fans, as after Brouhaha "the Slam" will be back for 2011 with new Host and Programmer Tim Anderson, who we are all looking forward to working with and should be ready to fill John's very big shoes.
