That's right! Popcorn Flicks, Enzian and the City of Winter Park's monthly outdoor film series with free movies and free popcorn, has been relocated for the next couple of months. With work being done in the usual Central Park, Winter Park, location, the August and September films have been moved to Lake Island Park at 255 South Denning Drive in Winter Park. Years ago we used to call it "Denning Park," and it's the soccer fields and playground area where New England dead ends, just a couple of blocks down from the back side of Winter Park Village.
Weather permitting, it should be a great spot for this Thursday's screening of BEACH PARTY, the 1963 musical-romantic comedy from B-movie studio American International that was the first of a series that also included BEACH BLANKET BINGO and MUSCLE BEACH PARTY. Robert Cummings stars as a middle-aged anthropologist studying the sex lives of teenagers, including Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Silly, ridiculous, fun, and the very definition of summer "camp", this time capsule of "surfin' all day and swingin' all night" also stars Harvey Lembeck as the immortal (and moronic) biker gang leader, Eric Von Zipper, and Morey Amsterdam (from The Dick Van Dyke Show), and features music by the big kahuna of the surf guitar, the legendary Dick Dale. Watch for cameos by Vincent Price as "Big Daddy", Beach Boy Brian Wilson as (what else?) a surfer, and Peter Falk as a biker, too.
So if 60s camp, twistin', and bikinis are your thing, be sure to come out and join Frankie, Dee Dee, Deadhead, The Ratz, The Mice, and the rest of the gang this Thursday night, August 12, for a genuine BEACH PARTY. Just remember it's at the park on Denning, not Park Avenue.
