Back in town after a relaxing and gastronomically fulfilling vacation in the sublime climes of Northern California to happily discover that things have been rocking and rolling at the theater. 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, the year's most beloved indie romantic comedy, keeps plugging away and producing Enzian's best crowds since MILK and THE WRESTLER in late 2008/early 2009. The film starts its 5th and final week this Friday, August 28, so if you haven't seen it yet or need to see it again with a friend (perfectly understandable), best plan on doing so by September 3.
Apparently this weekend's special events were both filled to capacity, though the audience couldn't have been more different. The Saturday midnight return of Full Sail grad and SAW sequels director Darren Lynn Bousman's outrageous gothic horror/sci-fi/musical, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA, complete with shadowcast, proved to be wildly popular and lived up to its "new cult classic" reputation. And Sunday afternoon's Orlando Harley-Davidson sponsored screening of the Dennis Hopper/Peter Fonda/Jack Nicholson late 60s counter-culture classic, EASY RIDER, was simply one of the coolest and most fun events at the theater in a while. Over 100 choppers made their way to Enzian and parked their bikes on property as the crowd enjoyed homemade barbeque and a live band outdoors prior to the screening. The fact that it's the 40th anniversary of the film and the 35mm print is virtually brand new didn't hurt any also. As a matter of fact, EASY RIDER was supposed to be the Closing Night Retro film at the 2009 Florida Film Festival in April, but the new print just wasn't quite ready. Luckily, we were finally able to procure it to be one of our August Cult Classics, creating the opportunity for this wonderful Sunday afternoon event.
EASY RIDER screens again tonight, Tuesday 8/25, at 9:30 PM. Admission is only $5. What more do you need?
