A whopping 17 films are reviewed this week by the New York Times, which customarily surveys new movies opening in local theaters. "Hanna" looks interesting and I'm hearing good things. "Meek's Cutoff" has had a terrific fest run. "To Die Like a Man" is terrific. I'm rather intrigued by "Blank City" despite missing it during the Tribeca fest two years ago.

Anticipation quickly turned to disappointment last night as bloggers and Tweeters swiftly dissed Anne Hathaway and James Franco's turn as Oscar night's MC's. More than 24 hours later, I don't actually remember much of the show. It was loud at the Oscar watching party, hard to hear and the picture was fuzzy at times.

Gary Winick at the 2003 Spirit Awards (pictured right). The producer and director, a fixture in New York's indie community in the 90's and then through the last decade, passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was just 49 years old.

Months and months ago, maybe it was July or August, a major industry insider saw "The Social Network" for the first time. The player was not involved with the film, but predicted to me over the summer that "The Social Network" would win best picture.

Decked out in one of the many Diane von Furstenberg dresses she'll wear over the next 10 days or so, doc director Lucy Walker (left) was striking in orange last night in SoHo. The night before heading to the West Coast for a trip that will culminate at the Academy Awards next Sunday, the British filmmaker (who now spends a lot of time Stateside) was toasted for her Oscar nominated movie, "Waste Land."

The first two feature films by Aaron Katz (pictured center, left) -- "Dance Party USA" and "Quiet City" -- were made for a combined budget of $5,000. His new film, "Cold Weather," earned three times that amount in just one weekend at IFC Center (according to iW estimates). It got off to a good start, buoyed by a rave New York Times review by Manohla Dargis.
