Santa Muerte

Brian B tipped me off to this article in the New York Times today about "Santa Muerte" (Saint Death), described by author Ginger Thompson as "a scythe-wielding skeleton with a blood-curdling grin." Indeed. Imagine the self-defined "outcasts and outlaws" praying in desperation to the saint in sidewalk shrines, sometimes seeking her protection when they do wrong. "She understands us, because she is a cabrona like us," one worshipper said of the saint who has been condemned by the Catholic church. "We are hard people and we live hard lives. But she accepts us all, when we do good and bad." Incredible...or as my friend Clay told me today after reading the article, "Isn't that so creepy and purely Mexican?! I love it."
