poet_now.jpgIt is fascinating that decades after poet Piri Thomas faced criticism for the obscenities in his 1967 book "Down These Mean Street", his work is again facing scrutiny. As Brian Brooks notes, a documentary about the writer will be censored when it airs on PBS tonight. The book has been hailed for its rawness and authenticity, a fact that won't truly be appreciated by those who watch a bleeped-out version of the film on public television tonight. The film, "Every Child is Born a Poet: The Life and Work of Piri Thomas", with excerpts and readings of the author's work, documents his move from an imprisoned former gang member to that of an accalimed writer and teacher.
