MUST-SEE MOVIES: "Maria Full of Grace" and "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster"

"Maria Full of Grace": Joshua Marston has made a terrific film. Beneath the surface tension created by an engaging story of a drug mule trying to get to America safely to deliver her goods and earn a fortune for herself and her family is a portrait of a young woman determinted to take charge of her own life, even if it means rejecting the expectations of the people around her. Marston's discovery, Catalina Sandino Moreno is a true star as the quietly rebellious Maria. What a moment for Marston and Moreno. Sitting at dinner with the two of them in Berlin back in February I wondered if they had yet realized how much their lives where changing. The film marks the big screen debut of two talents to watch.

"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster": Joe Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky's new doc is a great window into the creative process and team dynamics under pressure, and the group just happen to be a huge rock band. In the film, the band are facing a troubled lead-singer and trying to write and record a new album, with mixed results. Berlinger & Sinofsky are clearly in the right place at the right time and despite some concerns about letting them witness the drama, the band offers plenty of access to the group therapy sessions and occasional blow-ups. Fun stuff, even for marginal Metallica fans.
