The 40-Year-Old Baxter?

baxter.jpgI have yet to see "The 40-Year-Old Virgin", but I hear from numerous friends that it is quite funny. Instead, I recently saw "The Baxter" which I really enjoyed. But, friends tell me that its way too similar to "Virgin" (at least on the surface) to stand out. So, unfortunately for distributor IFC Films, "The Baxter" was left quietly at the altar on its opening weekend, with a paltry estimated per screen average of just $802 (earning an estimated $37,708 in three days).

What is confusing to me is why IFC decided to open the movie on 47 screens. In a failed attempt at corporate synergy, they curiously booked the film in nearly all of the Clearview Cinemas theaters in the New York/New Jersey area, from the cool new IFC Center to the massive Ziegfeld and beyond (Clearview is owned by IFC parent, Cablevision).

Meanwhile, "Virgin" dropped just 23% in the weekend grosses, making more than $16 million in estimated grosses. Its already earned nearly $50 million.

Sorry Baxter. :(

The Baxter (which I loathed) opened at The ZIEGFELD!!!?? That's insanity.
