at idfa: sisters

iamster.jpgI saw Kim Longinotto's harrowing "The Day I Will Never Forget" here at IDFA in 2002, so it seemed fitting that I would catch her next film, "Sisters in Law", here in Amsterdam. The powerful doc about two women -- a prosecutor and a court president -- in a town in Cameroon, has already had a stellar festival run, from Cannes to Telluride, from the Hamptons to Hawaii. The film (which opened IDFA last night) is so well done, offering a stunning examination of women's issues and the justice system in the African city. A final scene in which a small group women speak to a classroom of students is emotional, offering a hope that the bold prosecutor and court president might be inspiring a small wave of change.
