nyff: the queen

frearsmirrenNYFF.jpg

At a New York Film Festival press conference today...in the background are director of "The Queen", Stephen Frears and the film's star Helen Mirren, who is terrific as the current Queen of England, struggling to publicly deal with the death of Princess Diana nearly 10 years ago. Mirren carries so much of his role in her face, which exposes so much of her character's feelings...after watching the movie today, for some reason I kept thinking back to Imelda Staunton's performance in "Vera Drake", which I saw at the NYFF two years ago. I expect Mirren will be equally honored for this role, nabbing an Oscar nod for her performance.
