zeitgeist | behind the scenes
Today at indieWIRE, we take a closer look at Zeitgeist Films, on the occasion of their 20th anniversary. Brian Brooks and I visited their office early last week to talk with co-presidents Emily Russo and Nancy Gerstman about they company. They are pictured above with their staff, being photographed by Brian Brooks, and below at their desks. provincetown
Am spending the weekend in Provincetown, MA, enjoying the town and its film festival. A photo snapped as I biked the local trails on Saturday. update: in nyc | florent

"Penelope wears creme silk gown with embroidered straps," according to a press release just sent to indieWIRE by Marchesa, capturing Penelope Cruz earlier this evening at the Vicky Cristina Barcelona premiere. The folks here at the apartment emphasized that I needed to post this image... Continuing from the release: Co-founded by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, the company's namesake and muse is the noted eccentric European style icon Marchesa Luisa Casati. The collection, designed by Georgina Chapman, is available in the United States at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and specialty stores nationwide... Folks have been buzzing about the days of consistently warm weather that arrived in Paris. On Sunday, Parisians relaxed in the Marais' Place des Vosges as the afternoon sun heated up the city. in paris | saturday des arts
A favorite spot in Paris is the popular Pont des Arts, a walking bridge that crosses the Seine, connecting the Louvre with the Institut de France. On a warm and bustling Saturday night, we gathered with some snacks from The Bon Marche's terrific Grand Epicerie. in nyc | dgg
At the Apple Store Soho in New York City last night, David Gordon Green (left) chats with fans after the indieWIRE filmmaker talk. The crowd enjoyed the hour long talk with DGG and Olivia Thirlby, ahead of "Snow Angels, which opens tomorrow. And they really dug the trailer for his next film, "Pineapple Express," which will hit theaters in August. in missouri | university

Outside the Berlinale Palast tonight (above) as a large crowd gathered to await the arrival of the Rolling Stones and Martin Scorsese for the world premiere of their film, "Shine A Light." Later, inside the Palast (below), portraits of each (photographed earlier in the day) grace the walls of venue, in keeping with the Berlinale tradition of adding photos for each competition screening. The movie itself is a must-see for Stones fans, but after an exciting start that offers behind-the-scenes footage building up to a Beacon Theater concert in NYC two years ago (including sequences with Scorsese himself on camera preparing to show the show), the film becomes a rather straightforward document of the concert. Exceptional photography and sound make the film an excellent souvenir of the band today, but made me crave time listening to their original recordings. Over at indieWIRE, Shane Danielsen weighs in with his take on the '08 Berlinale's opening night film. super monday | obama

Its 64 degrees and rainy at Noon here in Manhattan, feeling a bit more like late-October than late July... So, here's one more photo I shot in Mystic, CT, during a warm, sunny boat ride yesterday afternoon on the Mystic River. in connecticut | torneo - paladino nuptials
What a great day yesterday for the marriage of former indieWIRE staffer, writer and The Bridal Wave author Erin Torneo and filmmaker/TV writer ("ToddWorld," "Blues Clues") Sascha Paladino here in Mystic, CT. The moving ceremony included readings from Erin and Sascha's emails and journals over the course of their relationship and an all-star jam session of family members (including Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn and others) playing a song for the couple. Filmmaker friends captured the day on Super 8 film. in connecticut | harry in mystic
Late last night, hundreds of people -- most of them children -- gathered outside Bank Square Books here in Mystic, CT (where I am attending a wedding). Anticipating the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the kids enjoyed a sidewalk party and many wandered around in costume as they anxiously waited for the book to go on sale. A group of us chatted with the kids (and a few parents) about the Potter series. We never had such anticipation for a book release when we were kids, but wondered if this is essentially their "Star Wars"... in nyc | bunly goodness

July 7th, 2007 was a big day for weddings around the country as couples coveted a 07.07.07 marriage date. For two friends in L.A. the date also had special significance, marking the annual Asian Tanabata celebration (Wikipedia link). While waiting for an Amy Winehouse set last night at SXSW, Brian and I ran into some friends from iTunes who tipped us off to what was rumored to be a fun set down the street billed as The Nightwatchman. The show delivered and then some, opening with Rage Against the Machine frontman Tom Morello who was joined by Perry Farrell and Slash (pictured above) playing a pair of Jane's Addition tunes. Later, Les Claypool, Wayne Kramer from MC5, Alexi Murdoch, Nuno Bettencourt, and others hit the stage. It all ended with a rousing version of "This Land Is Your Land" like you've never heard it before. The song has been entirely redefined for me. MTV News and the Village Voice report on the set. |
