in socal | iphone!

I just knew that today -- 07.07.07 -- would be my lucky day when, in line at the Apple Store in Old Pasadena this morning I was waiting in front of Chuck Henry, L.A.s famed local news anchor and TV personality. Anyone remember "Eye On L.A."?

Anyway, we both bought an iPhone this morning, along with about 45 other people who lined up before the store opened at 9 a.m.

iphone's a hit

iphonetease.jpgLast week I wondered whether the iPhone would meet its blockbuster estimates. According to a Wall Street Journal report this afternoon, Goldman Sachs is pegging weekend sales at 700,000 (while another analyst said the number was 500,000, more than twice his original estimate). Despite some recent reports of activation problems via AT&T, I finally decided to dive in and give the iPhone a try -- at least for the 2 weeks in which it can be returned -- and its sold out everywhere.

An Apple.com feature lets visitors know where they can get the iPhone the next day...of the 35 stores in California, only 10 will have iPhones tomorrow. And its sold out in most major cities, including New York City, L.A., San Francisco, Chicago...

apple's blockbuster?

iphonetease.jpgThere's little doubt that box office reports early next week will declare Pixar's "Ratatouille" a big hit, but what about Apple's iPhone which also debuts nationwide this Friday? Anticipation is high and the fans are already lining up as the first reviews come in. Personally speaking, as a Pixar fan I am quite anxious to see "Ratatouille," but I haven't even watched the trailer. And as a diehard Mac user, I've now read the iPhone reviews and every time I decide to take the leap, I pause and reconsider. The virtual keyboard, the high cost, the small hard drive and the questionable battery are my biggest concerns, in that order. The early reviews address all these points, but as many are warning, is it a bad idea to buy a first generation Apple product?

The reviews, so far...

"The iPhone is revolutionary; it's flawed. It's substance; it's style. It does things no phone has ever done before; it lacks features found even on the most basic phones. - David Pogue, The New York Times

"Despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer. Its software, especially, sets a new bar for the smart-phone industry, and its clever finger-touch interface, which dispenses with a stylus and most buttons, works well, though it sometimes adds steps to common functions." - Walter Mossberg and Katherine Boehret, The Wall Street Journal

"Apple has delivered a prodigy -- a slender fashion phone, a slick iPod and an Internet experience unlike any before it on a mobile handset. Still, iPhone isn't perfect, or even the most ideal smartphone for every user." - Edward C. Baig, USA Today

"It's a superbly engineered, cleverly designed and imaginatively implemented approach to a problem that no one has cracked to date: merging a phone handset, an Internet navigator and a media player in a package where every component shines, and the features are welcoming rather than foreboding."
- Steven Levy, Newsweek

kudos to katie (poor paula)

I'd don't think many of my friends are in front of a TV to watch the network news at 6:30 p.m., but thanks to DVR technology now we can watch it anytime...so while I rarely watched Katie Couric on TODAY, today I decided to catch her debut on CBS. She did a great job and the broadcast wove together a nice mix of breaking and informative stories, even including a "Free Speech" rant by Morgan Spurlock. The lead story about the rise of the Taliban, leading into a look at Bush's "War on Terror" speech today, followed by converation with columnist/author Thomas Friedman was solid.

Just before turning on Katie, though, I caught the first opening of CNN's own "Paula Zahn Now," with the anchor promising to go "in depth" on the biggest stories of the day...Her 8 p.m. newscast tonight lead with Zahn promising "the very latest" in the death of The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. And, here's the exact "breaking news" that topped her show. Zahn said breathlessly:

"We learned today (pause) that (pause) there is (pause) a videotape (pause) of Steve Irwin's untimely death. But (pause) it (pause) isnt (pause) being (pause) made (pause) public...

Katie also covered Irwin's tragic death, with a 20 second mention, ten minutes into her newscast.

kiki/herb

kikiherbSM.jpgThey're not dead!! I caught one of the last previews of "Kiki and Herb": Alive On Broadway" (the show opens tonight for one month only) the other day. How fitting and fun that they duo open the show with one of the big "songs of the summer" (you know the one...the title suits Ms. Kiki so well...).

Anway, we learn more than we ever might have imagined about Kiki DuRane, and her trusty sidekick Herb (played of course by Justin Bond and Kenny Mellman), during the outrageous and outspoken 2 hour and 20 minute show. Meanwhile, Choire Sicha offers a detailed look inside their new show in a recent NY Observer piece:

“We want to be in a venue where tourists from Jersey can go see this thing. And half of them will like it,” Mr. Mellman said. “And the other half will be appalled at the politics. I consider our show very political. It’s nice,” he said, “that we have a place to stand there and rant.”

mel, lindsay and lance

What do the three recent Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan, and Lance Bass stories have in common? They remind us that the Internet is entirely now driving celebrity and entertainment news and gossip. Nothing earth-shattering here, but with everyone commenting about how quickly the Mel Gibson story exploded, its certainly worth noting.

Lance Bass was outed by gossip blogs and the mainstream outlets went with speculation as news, Lindsay's letter reprimanding her for hardy partying was leaked to The Smoking Gun and quickly picked up many outlets. By the time the Hollywood trades hit print on Monday, the Gibson incident felt like old news. AOL's TMZ.com got the story first and numerous industry journalists and bloggers tracked it with continual updates all weekend. Now, with Gibson acknowledging his anti-Semitic remarks today from rehab (in the wake of Disney saying it will still release his film, but kill his Holocaust miniseries on ABC), the story already feels like its run its course. Do we even need a teary Diane Sawyer with Gibson interview for closure?

Let's just move on to the next celeb scandal.

congressional report: earth heating up

I was chatting with someone recently who questioned the veracity of Al Gore's claims about global warming in "An Inconvenient Truth." According to the AP, a report commissioned by the U.S. Congress was delivered today reporting that the earth's temperatures are now higher than they have been in at least 400 years, adding that humans are impacting recent global warming and were the cause of half of the increase in hurricanes. phil v. chuck

back to blogging... Punxsutawney Phil, that famous groundhog in Pennsylvania, says we'll have another 6 weeks of winter, while his local rival Staten Island Chuck is calling for an early Spring. The mild temps here in NYC lately seem to favor Chuck's forecast.

Over the next six weeks, I'll be traveling to Berlin, L.A., Columbia, MO, and Austin, TX, so I have a feeling i'll be getting a mix of both seasons.

more on jt...

Fine, I give up. It doesn't really matter who JT Leroy really is, does it? I blogged a bit recently about the steady stream of articles trying to expose or somehow unmask the person known publicly as JT (with a person claiming to be JT posting a comment). Now, in a new piece in The Guardian today, Laura Barton talks with the person or people who are JT Leroy. Fascinating stuff. If you can't believe it's happening, pretend it's a movie. - Warhol

will the real jt leroy please stand up?

jtleroySQ.jpgI've crossed paths with the person known as JT Leroy (pictured right in Toronto last year, photo by Brian Brooks/indieWIRE) briefly on a few occasions at film festivals: Cannes, Toronto, AFI Fest...having read JT's exceptional writing and always intrigued by the public persona, its hard to ignore the steady stream of recent stories charging that JT Leroy is a fraud, or an imposter, or something like that. So who really wrote those books, and "Elephant", and the new film...

A new WWD story continues the rumor that the real JT is a woman named Laura Albert -- or Emily Frasier or Speedie -- (pictured left). At the Toronto party for "The Heart is Deceitful", which will be released next year by Palm Pictures, the woman sitting next to "JT" was identified to us as "Emily," and described as "a member of his family."

A recent, lenghy piece in New York Magazine explored the issue, while a Washington Post article went even further:

The whole long affair appears to be one of the great literary hoaxes of our day, and it fooled a whole lot of people as well as media.

jake time

jakeSMshot.JPGIn the Wall Street Journal, John Lippman asks "Will Jake Take?", considering whether or not Jake Gyllenhaal (pictured right in an iPOP photo by indieWIRE's Brian Brooks) is a Hollywood star.

Whether or not Jake makes it big in tinsel town, the guy is clearly an indie success story and Focus Features must be loving the fact that "Jarhead" made way more money than expected in its opening weekend. It all bodes well for the type awareness that the company will need for "Brokeback Mountain" when its release widens, and it gives Jake a nice boost during an awards season in which most Oscar talk seemed to be swirling around co-star Heath Ledger. Now he'll be an even more likely awards candidate for his role in the romantic "gay cowboy movie."

Dear Tom, Bring Back Pat Kingsley!

cruise3x.jpgIn the NY Times today, Sharon Waxman considers Tom Cruise, writing that in Hollywood, "there was sincere confusion over what Mr. Cruise, a 20-year veteran of the publicity machine, had in mind with his recent public appearances and statements", continuing:

Mr. Cruise's spokeswoman, his sister Lee Anne De Vette, said she had not heard anything negative after the "Oprah" appearance. "You're looking at someone who's genuinely very happy," she said. "The response we've gotten back is complete enthusiasm and exhilaration for his enthusiasm and exhilaration. He's a very happy person."

Is Tom Cruise OK?

tomc.jpgBeing a fan of "Jerry Maguire" I really have to wonder if Tom Cruise is near some sort of breakdown. I missed the already legendary Oprah episode while I was out of town, but I saw the clips on ETACCESSINSIDER last night. Defamer's coverage has been priceless and now amigo Michael just IM'd me with a link to a clip (also via Defamer) that is beyond words. Check out TVgasm for their incredible video montage.

If all of this is supposed to make me want to see "War of the Worlds", its really not working. I had major interest in it as a would-be summer blockbuster spectacle, but how I watch the movie now without thinking of this TVgasm video? I have to go watch the clip again now...

Meet Todd Solondz

An interview with Todd Solondz in Gothamist:

I think that certainly there's nothing in this movie or anything I've done really that I think is as troubling as what one sees in real life. Real life is much harsher and certainly here we are in the days of Terri Schiavo. You can't get more obscene or grotesque than what life has to offer.

Word of the Year: Blog

Merriam-Webster named its 2004 word of the year, based on online searches on its website, the leader was "blog."

Blog noun [short for Weblog] (1999) : a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer

NYT: The Hostess Diary: My Year at a Hot Spot

In the New York Times today, Coco Henson Scales writes about working for year at NYC hotspot Hue, including details of her encounters with Star Jones, Monica Lewisnky, Naomi Campbell and Barbara Bush:

"A few minutes later, I check on the happy couple. Fully clothed, Star is on her hands and knees on the bed, laughing. Her fianc is behind her, hands around her waist, mimicking a sex act. In front of the other customers in the room, he then flips her over and climbs on top of her. I stare, mortified.

After two rounds of drinks, they are ready to leave. I watch curiously as they ask for the check and Liza tells them politely it is on Karim. "Oh, wow, thank you," Star says. "I'm sorry, I would tip you but I don't have my wallet," she tells Liza.

"Oh, no problem," Liza says, clasping her hands in prayer. "God will provide."

Star smiles as her eyes look to the ceiling. "Yes," she says. "He will."

Unlikely Hit: "Avenue Q"

AQ4.BWAY_Rosegg_big.jpgWith songs that include "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?," "If You Were Gay," "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist," "The Internet Is For Porn," and You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)," all sung by a mixture of people and puppets, Avenue Q is an unlikely hit (not to mention the play's catchy opening refrain, "It sucks to be me!")

The play started in a small theater off Union Square downtown and then moved to Broadway. Tonight, in what was considered an upset, it won the Tony Award for best musical, as well as two other Tonys for best book and best score. "It certainly doesn't suck to be us tonight," said producer Robyn Goodman while accepting the final award of the night, live on network TV.

I caught "Q" last July, shortly before it opened on Broadway -- its a blast. The play is the story of a college graduate (a puppet named Princeton) who moves to NYC unsure what to do with his life. He meets a motley crew of people and puppets on "Avenue Q," from a neighborhood slacker and a closeted roommate, to building manager Gary Coleman and a young woman puppet who strikes his fancy.

BREAKING NEWS: Mel Gibson Uses the 'F' Word

gibsonSM.JPGSometimes those gossip columns really get the scoops! Apparently last week, Mel Gibson used the 'F' word, in public!!

According to today's Rush & Molloy column in the New York Daily News, the filmmaker shocked an audience of home video retailers in California with his "potty mouth." (It surprises me that video folks have never heard such language given their business, but gee whiz, who knows...) Rush & Molloy characterize the exchange as follows:

"He was cantankerous and said he had just rolled out of bed. One person asked him how the success of 'The Passion' had changed how he makes decisions.

"He was silent for a minute, and then said, 'F-- you! I don't mean f-- you; I mean "f-- you" in general. I don't have to answer any of these questions anymore. I'm a hell of a lot wealthier than I once was.'

"People's mouths were hanging open."

A 20th Century Fox executive claimed it never happened, but a second ear-witness told us, "He was joking. He does have no trouble saying 'f-- you,' though."

The Truth About Kevin Spacey?

The brother of Kevin Spacey, a Rod Stewart impersonator by the name of Randy Fowler (thats Spacey's real last name), is banking on the fact that the world really cares about whatever secrets may exist in the Oscar-winning actor's closet. Calling his brother "a bit of a weirdo", Fowler told the Sunday Mirror in London that he has written a book about Spacey that will tell the truth about the actor. He explained that he will shop it to publishers and cash in on the attention.

"I'm looking for 15 minutes of fame and this book will give me that," the seemingly envious siblling, and drummer, told the paper. "I have never in the past used his name for my own career but hopefully this will help put me back on tour."

Meanwhile in The Observer today, the paper profiled Spacey, who has settled into a new life in London theater. After re-capping the fact that Spacey is a notoriously private celebrity, the paper noted that as a result of the odd late-night incident in which the actor was somehow injured while walking his dog, he will face increasing heat from the aggressive British tabloids. Perhaps, The Observer noted lightly in conclusion, Spacey's big secret is not such a big deal after all. Maybe the self-professed dog lover, the paper wrote, has actually been a cat lover all along.

Dear Donald...

2929 Entertainment partner (and Dallas Maverick's owner) Mark Cuban. has posted a Dear Donald (Trump) letter that, in the words of my friend Mark (Rabinowitz), "rips him a new one." It seems that Trump of "The Apprentice" fame has dissed Cuban's new reality show, "The Benefactor," in which Cuban will give away $1 million to a person of his choosing. In his blog, Cuban details meeting Trump, and writes:

After leaving your office, I promised myself that if I ever got liquid and had an obscene amount of money in the bank, I would make a point not to remind myself and everyone else around me of it every minute of every day unlike you. I guess our definition of success is just completely different.

I used to wear a suit to work every day. I worked hard so I wouldnt have to. I bought a big house soI could throw a football and play whiffleball in it, rather than show it off. Idont play golf, I work out. I dont have an entourage, I have friends. You talk about how much you are getting paid per episode, I talk about the fact Im not. You need to make more, I have enough. 10 Years Later, More Cobain Murder Rumors

Ever since I first embraced Tom Grant's "Kurt Cobain was murdered" rumors years ago, most of my friends have called the view a conspiracy theory. But after spending hours exploring Grant's website back in the 90s, I was convinced that Kurt didn't pull the trigger.

A big fan of Nirvana who was lucky enough to see them play live a couple of times (and subsequently deeply saddened by Kurt's death), I've since followed the stories of Kurt's life and death closely.

At Sundance '98, I covered Courtney Love's attempt to stop Nick Broomfield from showing "Kurt and Courtney" -- Sundance pulled the movie after pressure from Courtney's lawyers but Broomfield showed the film anyway at a secret screening. The movie depicted an array of questionable characters and odd theories, and still Tom Grant's evidence seemed solid to me.

On the ten-year anniversary of Kurt's death today, Grant joined the authors of a new book, "Love & Death," at a press conference in Midtown Manhattan to talk about the latest information that has been uncovered and to call for a re-opening of the case. The authors, investigative reporters Max Wallace and Ian Halperin, were consultants on Broomfield's doc and now are saying conclusively that they believe Kurt Cobain was murdered.

Santa Muerte

Brian B tipped me off to this article in the New York Times today about "Santa Muerte" (Saint Death), described by author Ginger Thompson as "a scythe-wielding skeleton with a blood-curdling grin." Indeed. Imagine the self-defined "outcasts and outlaws" praying in desperation to the saint in sidewalk shrines, sometimes seeking her protection when they do wrong. "She understands us, because she is a cabrona like us," one worshipper said of the saint who has been condemned by the Catholic church. "We are hard people and we live hard lives. But she accepts us all, when we do good and bad." Incredible...or as my friend Clay told me today after reading the article, "Isn't that so creepy and purely Mexican?! I love it."
