With the Telluride and Toronto fests behind us, and the New York Film Festival kicking off tonight, like it or not we are clearly entering awards season. Movie City News returns with Gurus o' Gold, its survey of 15 entertainment reporters (including myself) playing along and predicting the potential Oscar nominees (among seen and unseen new films).
The likely best actress Oscar race will be well-represented in New York over the next week, tonight with the arrival of leading best actress contender Helen Mirren in "The Queen", and then in a few days Penelope Cruz in "Volver" (both films should figure in other categories as well). And not to be overlooked is a potential nomination for "Little Children" lead Kate Winslet, who will be at the fest tomorrow. Its certainly still early, and I've included a pair of films in my list that haven't screened yet, no doubt other unseen films will also have an impact as critics and writers start to weigh in.
But, this is my take so far and my full list (as sent to David Poland for the MCN survey this week) is below. indieWIRE tracks awards in a special Awards Watch section that will heat up as the season picks up and MCN's full list from all 15 prognosticators is available on their site.BEST PICTURE 1.
