Nine years ago. My first Cannes. An incredible encounter with Wong Kar-Wai.

With Volker Schlondorff, Agnes Varda, Samira Makhmalbaf, Faye Dunaway, James Gray and others in a standing room only Cannes screening room, he arrived to show a short and talk about his work. It was crowded and hot in the theater that day. WKW strode patiently into the dark room, smiling and wearing his trademark sunglasses. He then paused and lit a cigarette. I wrote about the afternoon for indieWIRE.

"The privilege of being a director is that you can control time," Wong Kar-wai offered that day, "In our daily life we cannot control time; this is the fun part of being a director."

It's one of my favorite moments in nearly a decade of great Cannes experiences.
