Can someone explain what is going on with the collapse of "A Little Game Without Consequence" just two weeks before the Focus Features film, set to star Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz, was supposed to go into production. Trade stories today from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter offer details about the departure of the stars and then writer/director Gabriele Mucchino, but one particular quote (from the HR piece) is a bit perplexing:

Several sources said the trio wanted to keep the project's dark tone, while Focus wanted to make a more commercial movie. Focus said Tuesday that it is still planning to make the movie and is looking for a new director.

Apparently, the stars signed on pending a suitable rewrite by Mucchino, but then recently left when they saw the final draft. HR says that the film's producers (Alain Chabat and Stephanie Danan) then backed Focus and ditched the writer/director, with Variety saying that Focus' James Schamus is being tapped to try to rewrite the movie and preserve Carrey's involvement. Unless, I am reading something wrong here, it sounds like the director and his two stars were in sync, but then all exited when Focus and the producers tried to take the movie in a more mainstream direction?
