Later today we'll be sending out a press release regarding the indieWIRE Undiscovered Gems Film Festival, which will start Monday, taking 9 films to 7 cities, via Emerging Cinemas and digital technology. We've picked Bryan Poyser's "Dear Pillow," David Flamholc's "House of the Tiger King," Jessica Hausner's "Hotel," Alain Guiraudie's "No Rest for the Brave" (Pas de repos pour les braves), Celesta Davis' "Awful Normal," Jonathan Stack's "Liberia: An Uncivil War," and Jesse Moss' "Speedo" to screen in New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, Red Bank, NJ, Champaign, IL, Lincoln, NE, Wilmington, DE, Lake Worth, FL, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Scranton, PA. The films were chosen from our annual list of the top undistributed films of the year.
We starting doing the list at the end of each year, and 2 years ago, the California Film Institute in my home state came up with the idea of screening films from the list in their theater. After we screened selections in San Rafael this year, Ira Deutchman from Emerging called me about taking the films on the road through their network, we recently added IFC Center to the mix, and there you go! With thanks to The New York Times and Tower Records for their support. Its a cool list of films...
One of the most exciting parts of this for me is the idea of getting these movies into cities where these movies would never be available on a big screen in a theatrical run, not to mention a first NYC big screen showing for a few of the films.
