The Gurus o' Gold are back over at Movie City News with a group of us again prognosticating the annual Oscar race.
"Inception," "The King's Speech" and "Toy Story 3" top the list of expected best picture nominees, but its early. We were asked to offer a list fifteen Best Picture contenders, some remain unseen by anyone. That said, a bit more than a week into September -- in the wake of the Venice and Telluride fests -- there are films seeing their Oscar stock rise just as some already start to fade.
The unordered list that I sent in this week was:
"The Kids Are Alright"
"The King's Speech"
"Toy Story 3"
"The Social Network"
"The Tree of Life"
Of the films on that list, "Tree of Life" remains with a distributor or even a plan for a 2010 release, yet it figures to play a role it some company can step up swiftly and take over the release plan for the movie. Of that long list, four other major players with a early edge on a best picture, at this stage, would seem to be "Inception," "The King's Speech," "Hereafter," and "The Social Network." But, keep an eye on "Black Swan" and "The Kids Are Alright."
More will come into focus over the coming weeks.
