Its been nearly 10 years since Ellen came out and last week, Oprah went out of her way to declare that she isn't gay (not that there's anything wrong with it), while this week news shows and blogs are buzzing about Lance Bass coming out. While most people joked, "Its about time," some are wondering if he was forced out. Blogger Perez Hilton, who essentially outed Bass months ago online, said tonight on Access Hollywood that he did so because he knew the truth. But older generation out actor Richard Chamberlain warned, "Its still dangerous. I would never advise a young actor to come out...society moves very slowly, there's a long way to go, especially in America." "There is some controversy about outing people," Hilton said, "The only way we are going to really have change is with visibility."
Mainstream news outlets picked up on recent blog posts, with an ABC News online story tracking Bass' movements at a gay bar and citing online coverage that named other names. Continuing on Access Hollywood, Hilton warned, "If i have to drag some people screaming out of the closet, then I will."
And what if he did, but nobody cared. That would be true progress.
