Believe the hype, Woody Allen's latest really is that good. Premiere audiences are notoriously warm, but at Peggy Siegal's Plaza Athenee dinner last night an eclectic mix of folks were buzzing fondly about "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". I watched it a second time and then sat down for the late-night meal with a a model, a fashion designer and a soap actor (with a rock star, mogul, filmmaker, actor, and others nearby). Numerous people told me they came in with low expectation after a few too many recent Woody Allen misfires. This one won them over. I liked it in Cannes and even more the second time. "VCB" is breezy and quite fun. Penelope Cruz nearly steals the movie with some hilarious Spanish-language scenes...

Also at dinner, folks were buzzing about David Gordon Green's "Pineapple Express, which many of the bold-faced folks apparently saw earlier this week. Word on the film was unanimously positive, although one hotelier noted that his expectations were built up a bit by friends who called it one of the funniest movies, ever. So better to go in expecting it to be mildly entertaining...

I had promised myself never go to see any other Woody Allen film again. I realized it would be better to remember him as one of the best writer/directors ever, and simply forget about his last films. But you convinced me otherwise...
