Been meaning to blog about the new Martin Scorsese movie, "The Departed" since seeing it the other night...first, the screening was hosted by the NY Governor's Office for Motion Picture and TV Development. While the movie is set in Boston, it was actually shot in NYC (of course, minus some key exteriors as one blog reader just reiterated...giving them a number of tax local and state tax credits)...anyway, from a New Yorkers perspective, they faked Boston well.
As for the film (which is apparently on its way to being the weekend's #1 film) , its quite entertaining and fun ride, save for the increasingly over-the-top performance by Jack Nicholson that creeps in as the story unfolds. The real star of the film as far as I am concerned is Leonardo DiCaprio, in a terrific performance that gets more and more intesting story unfolds. For my money, "Good Fellas" is still the best Scorsese film of the past 20 years, and I'm also a huge fan of "The Aviator." While well made, this one doesn't quite have the distinctiveness of a classic Scorsese movie, but maybe I will feel differently over time. There's awards talk online, but at this point I thnk I'd only put Leo in the real running for a major prize...but we shall see, its only early October.
