In a post reminiscent of the recent "For Your Consideration," seemingly perennial Oscar prognosticator David Poland admits tonight that while he doesn't want to get into the next awards season, he is easily lured into one early pick, namely Johnny Depp in a film that is still in production. Noting that, "Word from the set about his performance - from multiple sources - is excellent," hilariously, Poland writes:
I believe now that Johnny Depp is a 95% bet to be nominated for Best Actor as the title character in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in a very, very crowded field of 2007 male movie performances… and an 80% chance to win."
Not sure how to do the math there, but it sounds like Depp should dust off his tux. And the fun keeps coming, Poland emphasizes, "Depp is like an aesthetic zit that actors are drooling to pop." Lovely. He's got my vote.
Finally, later in the blog post, Poland writes:
"Eddie Murphy as James 'Thunder' Early did stink of Oscar. And so does Depp as Sweeney Todd."
If I were at the studio that is backing "Sweeney Todd," I'd be terrified...this is beyond the type of early Oscar buzz that hurt "Dreamgirls" so badly, creating expectations that the film simply couldn't live up to (even if that buzz was based on 20 minutes from the film that were screened in Cannes).
