hopkinsindian.jpgI've agreed to join in what promises to be a fun Movie City News weekly feature, "The Guru's o' Gold" which will offer the latest predictions for Academy Awards nominations from a group of journalists and awards watchers.

This week's chart includes a first look at predictions (not preferences) for the best actor race, and the first of a regular charting of the best picture possibilities. Again, these are predictions based on best guesses of what seems to be happening. I've always been overly interested in the annual Oscar race, increasingly following it when I worked at ABC-TV writing and producing online content for Oscar.com. The prognosticating is particulary tough with a number of key films still unavailable to writers and editors. This week I saw on that could provide a darkhorse candidate, namely "The World's Fastest Indian" starring Anthony Hopkins. The film was a hit recently at AFI Fest in LA and early word on Hopkins performance has been quite positive. With good reason, he does a great job, elevating what could have been a rather conventional film into a real crowd pleaser. It's the true story of a tenacious aging man from New Zealand hoping to break the land speed record at Bonneville. We'll see how the race shapes up...
