Friday night in Toronto saw a number of star-studded bashes celebrating some of the higher profile TIFF titles. I started the evening with Richard Linklater, Claire Danes and Zach Efron at the bash for "Me and Orson Welles." iW's Brian Brooks navigated a couple of egos to get a moment with the always supportive Rick, and Zefron, for iPOP. Many of Linklater's closest industry friends were at the Empire restaurant bash, including Louis Black and Janet Pierson from SXSW, John Sloss and Matt Dentler from Cinetic...
Meanwhile, over at Ultra Suede on Queen St. downtown, where I caught up with iW's James Israel, the Fox Searchlight gang were celebrating "The Secret Life of Bees" with a fine spread of food and 60s soul, albeit a rather quiet vibe. After hanging there with some old and new friends, we made the quick jaunt to Spice Route on King St. where a large crowd had gathered to watch the "Burn After Reading" team arrive. The craziness outside contrasted the terrific vibe inside. No VIP room necessary. Everyone milled around, stepping into the Cartier photo booth, tasting some excellent Asian dishes and sipping exotic mixed drinks. Evoking last year's Miramax Oscar weekend party, pillows with quotes from the film were placed throughout the venue.
The evening wrapped up in the early hours of Saturday across town at Ben Wick’s Pub in Cabbagetown where cast and crew celebrated So Yong Kim's "Treeless Mountain" and Nik Fackler's "Lovely, Still" with many friends. Prolific young producers Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy are the common ground between the two films, producing both with other partners.
