An article in Variety reported that Zhang Yimou will be overseeing the design of the Opening & Closing Ceremonies to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, with artistic consultation from Steven Spielberg.
While Zhang modestly stated, "I am very honored to be named the chief director of the ceremonies. It is a huge task," before promising to "fulfill the task successfully."
Spielberg, predicably promised to make "this Olympic opening and closing ceremonies the most emotional anyone has ever seen."
It will be interesting to see how the ceremonies will be shaped by two such powerful visual story tellers. What might a fusion of the awesome visual granduer of Hero and House of Flying Daggers be when combined with the master of the set-piece as demonstrated in Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, Jaws or Jurassic Park?
And more importantly, will Zhang be able to curb Spielberg'stendency to dive headlong into sentimentality as seen in E.T. or Hook or A.I. or...
