Film Recap: "Slasher," "The Corporation," "Gypsy 83"
So in between basketball watching (otherwise known as an excuse to drink beer) and sitting in the sunshine this weekend, I did manage to see a few upcoming flicks (on tape, so I didn't get the full theatrical experience). They were: "Slasher" by Jon Landis, a doc airing on IFC in June. Follows a used-care salesman extraordinaire who is a hired gun to help struggling auto dealerships. This film follows the slasher's weekend in Memphis; he's quite a character, which gives the film a lot of energy. I found it overly long, but overall worth a look...Landis has found such a freakshow subject that it's hard not to get engrossed. I also saw another doc "The Corporation," which I missed at Sundance and Toronto. It's more than two hours long, but have no fear, it's completely brilliant. Should be required viewing for any citizen of the planet...about the abuses of corporations and what their real agendas are. Despite the hot-button topic, I thought it was actually pretty fair (I really liked the Shell exec who invited protestors to his house for lunch.) Opens in June or July, definitely check it out. Plenty of reading at the film's website. Lastly, I saw "Gypsy 83," which was really disappointing. Sara Rue, who I usually like, plays a Stevie Nicks obsessed would-be singer. I found the whole thing tiring and cliched and I wouldn't recommend it. Who wants to see annoying goth kids on screen? Posted by indiewendy at 04:51PM on Mar 29, 2004
