Last night I had the privilege of attending a reading of Monica the Musical! at the Manhattan Theatre Club. I went because my buddy Dan Blau co-wrote the book and lyrics (with Tracie Potochnik) and his brother Adam did the music. It's the story of Bill and Monica (and Hillary and Janet Reno, and Vernon Jordan, and…well, Welsh superstar Tom Jones) told through splashy musical numbers. It was the funniest thing I've seen in ages. I actually had a little bit of trepidation going into it…atter all, Miss Lewinsky is so six years ago. But these guys have a fresh take on the material, and I think it's actually the perfect time for us to look back and laugh about how important an intern's blow job seemed back before the current administration got into bigger troubles (insert your own phallic "weapon of mass destruction" joke here).

In the program notes, the authors clarified that their play was a work of fiction -- as they put it, "the tragic national scandal between a President and his intern did not, in fact, take place entirely in rhyming couplet form." So they take plenty of liberties with the facts (thank goodness, 'cause we know the official story all too well) -- the musical imagines Bill going cavorting in London with Tom Jones, Hillary getting embroiled in a lesbian affair with Janet Reno, Ken Starr being a "Star Trek"-loving nerd (well that part might be true), and more White House hijinks. The source material lends, of course, lends itself to plenty of tongue-in-cheek references -- like Clinton ruling the country with "a soft hand and an iron stick," Bill burning his draft card while Hillary burned her bra, Monica seeking solace in Little Debbie Snack Cakes, Ken Starr singing to Monica, "Did you get in the pants/Of Ulysses S. Grant?," and Bettie Currie delivering a show-stopping gospel number "Access Denied" about locking Monica out of the Oval Office.

Dan and the rest of the "Monica!" gang are in talks with producers, so with any luck, everyone will be able to sing-along with the Clintons by election time.
