Open Doors to Mel Brooks' Film: "The Producers"
Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York, (September 28) - Douglas C. Steiner, Chairman, Steiner Studios, today announced an agreement with Mel Brooks' production company Brooksworks, LLC, to bring the production of Brooks' latest film, The Producers, to New York and to Steiner Studios this fall. Joined by New York Governor George E. Pataki, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Brooklyn Senator Martin J. Golden, and dozens of representatives of the film and TV community, Mr. Steiner welcomed producer Mel Brooks and director Susan Stroman to Steiner Studios.
The Producers stars Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Pre-production begins late fall at Steiner Studios, filming begins late February, with an intended release date at the end of 2005.
This is the first major film project to be announced at Steiner Studios. Opening this fall on an enclosed, 15-acre site at the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, the 280,000-square-foot facility will be New York City's first Hollywood-style (and scale) production and support facility. Newly built from the ground-up and supported by New York artistic talent, Steiner Studios will be a full-service, state-of-the-art "production factory," equipped for start-to-finish production of major motion pictures, independent films, television, music videos and broadcast commercials.
"I've been a fan of Mel Brooks for 2,000 years," said Steiner. "We're thrilled that Mel has decided to make his classic story about New Yorkers, by New York's top talent right here in New York....where it should be!"
At full operation, Steiner Studios expects to generate approximately 1,000 new jobs.
"This facility was designed by the industry," Steiner said. "We went to Hollywood and talked to the people making movies about what they needed. They told us to make it big, efficient, and economically competitive. And that's what we did. We built a massive, state-of-the-art facility. Now with the new state film tax credit, which we helped spearhead, we have everything in place for producers to make all of their movies in the greatest city in the world."
