Master of light and shades

With credits including Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love, Wong Kar-wai is one of Asian cinema's most revered figures. So, naturally, any interview with Wong must address questions of technique and themes. To be honest, though, I'm more curious about the details. Why does Wong always wears dark sunglasses? Why are his leading men and leading ladies - including Nicole Kidman - always so outrageously beautiful? And why does every one of them smoke like a bushfire and drink like Oliver Reed? "Where did you get this tie?" Wong asks, revealing a similar fascination with detail as he sits down for our interview. Sascha Molitorisz speaks with Wong Kar-wai in the Sydney Morning Herald.
