John Woo and Su Chao-Pin's martial arts epic "Reign of Assasins" ("Jianyu") will get a theatrical release in North America and South Africa thanks to a deal just brokered with The Weinstein Company. The film stars Michelle Yeoh ("Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon") as an assassin who falls in love with the son of a man her gang killed. The film will be released later this year in China. Release dates in North America and South Africa are undecided.
The Weinstein Company chief Harvey Weinstein is gearing for the release, "I am thrilled to be back in business with Michelle Yeoh and am very excited to be working with John Woo on another one of his brilliant films. It was a pleasure working with the team at Fortissimo Films and I look forward to working together in bringing this film to audiences around the world."
The Weinstein Company's Peter Lawson and Michal Podell Steinberg negotiated the deal with Fortissimo Films' Chairman Michael J. Werner and Winnie Lau. Fortissimo had acquired all rights for the project outside of China and Southeast Asia last year.
