12th Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival’s Spotlights and Tributes

Athens’s 12th annual Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (March 12-21) will highlight Polish documentary films and feature a tribute to Dutch director Joris Ivens.

Director Krzysztof Kieslowski’s documentary oeuvre, a precursor to his later fictional work (“The Three Colors Trilogy,” “The Decalogue”), will figure prominently in the Polish focus of the festival. 18 of his documentaries will screen, including “The Legend,” which chronicles the life of Polish writer Stefan Zeromski; one of Kieslowski’s most political works, “Workers ‘71”; and “First Love,” which follows seven-months in the life of a married couple.

A spotlight to Andrzej Fidyk, an award-winning Polish documentary filmmaker, who focuses mainly on the repression of human rights, will also add to the Polish lineup. Films of his to be screened include “Battu’s Bioscope,” “Yodok Stories,” and “Belarusian Waltz”. In addition, a Polish Docs Spotlight will present more contemporary documentary work coming out of the country.

The Joris Ivens tribute will present films from all stages of the Dutch documentary filmmaker’s career. Ivens, who died in 1989, collected numerous awards during his long-spanning career, including the World Peace Prize (1955), the Cannes Palm D’Or for “The Seine Meets Paris,” and the Venice Golden Lion for the entirety of his work in 1988. 20 of his documentaries, including “The Bridge” and “Indonesia Calling” will screen during the festival.
