San Fran Film Society Announces Hearst Screenwriting Award Winner

Today, the San Francisco Film Society announced that Mora Stephens has won the $15,000 Hearst Screenwriting Grant for her script “Made in the USA.”  The screenplay’s synopsis, as provided by SFSS:  “Following the funeral of his high-school girlfriend, a young American man sets out on an odyssey to Shanghai, Shenzhen and finally Saipan to find and rescue his daughter.”  The Hearst Screenwriting Grant, named after its funder William R. Hearst III, provides funding to an established, “mid-career” screenwriter working on a new script.  Stephens’s previous film “Conventioneers” won the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards’ John Cassavetes Award for Best Feature.  She is currently in production on her script “Homeland” with “Frozen River” producer Heather Rae.  The Society named Caveh Zahedi’s “The Jerusalem Syndrome” as the grant’s honorable mention.  [Bryce J Renninger]
