“J’ai Tué Ma Mère” wins MovieSquad IFFR 2010 Award

The young people’s jury of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) awarded the MovieSquad IFFR 2010 Award to Canadian Xavier Dolan’s debut feature “J’ai Tué Ma Mère”. The award comes along with $2,000 to spend on promoting the film within the Netherlands.

The jury, which consisted of five members aged 15 to 18 years old, selected the winner from the 20 festival films that were nominated for consideration. Three out of the 20 were nominated for the award. This year’s other two nominees were: “Alamar” directed by Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio and “R” directed by Michael Noer and Tobias Lindholm.

In their statement, the jury said: ““J’ai Tué Ma Mère” is not just a film, but a piece of art. The film has a very recognizable theme, which we are sure a lot of teenagers can identify themselves with. The director combined all film elements in the best possible way. Music, use of different coloured images and dreamy scenes give something extra to the story. Moreover, the use of poetry gives depth to the story and helps explain the behaviour of both the mother and son.”
