Jia Zhangke Retro Heading to MoMA

For the first time in the US, a retrospective spanning Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke’s entire oeuvre—eight features and six shorts—will screen at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), March 5-20.

In the short span of his career, Jia has generally come to be considered the leading figure of the sixth generation of Chinese filmmakers, a group that also includes such directors as Wang Xiaoshuai and Zhang Yuan, for his films (which include “24 City,” “Platform,” “The World” and “Still Life”) that reflect personal and industrial changes in contemporary China over the past 50 years.

The exhibition, organized by Jytte Jenson, Curator at MoMA’s Department of Film, will screen in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. From opening night through March 8, Jia will be present at most screenings to introduce the films along with his recurring leading actress, Zhao Tao. He will also participate in a special Modern Mondays event at MoMA where he will discuss his recent films, preview his upcoming feature, “Shanghai Chuan Qi” (“I Wish I Knew”), and take part in a Q&A.
