"The Bird and The Bee" Valentine's Day EP!
Okay, this is just too sweet... (in a good kinda way.) The Bird and The Bee are releasing a 4 song Valentine's Day EP today just in time for all you love birds out there. You can even send your sweetie a song. Enjoy!
Announcing the February 12th release of the bird and the bee One Too Many Hearts EP! A four-song Valentine's Day EP from the bird and the bee featuring three new originals--"Birthday," "Last Day of Our Love" & "Come As You Were"--with music by Greg Kurstin & Inara George's trademark lyrics, sung sweetly but laced with her wry observations on love found and lost. Inara also sings a duet with Gus Seyffert on "Tonight You Belong to Me," a 1920s song performed by Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin in the 1979 film The Jerk. Criterion DVD Design for "The Ice Storm"
I always admire the graphic design at Criterion for offering risky, bold ways of marketing classic films: maintaining the mood and images while also making it appear fresh and new. The DVD design for their new release of Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm" is equally impressive.
Film Permit Rules in NYC Still a Nagging Issue
I'm sure this is the last thing people want to hear about as the holidays, Sundance, and all these great new films loom (THERE WILL BE BLOOD being one of them) but sadly the New York Film office permit issue is still a problem. While the MOFTB has revised the rules and clarified their intent to allow photographers and "low impact" independent filmmakers to shoot in New York without a permit, the language they are using in the new proposed regulations is needlessly confusing: For purposes of this subdivision (b), “obstruction” shall mean the assertion of exclusive control with respect to the use or occupancy of such space, and “unobstructed sidewalk use” shall mean, with respect to filming or photography occurring on a sidewalk or other public pedestrian passageway, the use of such space that is not an “obstruction.” Okay, what the hell does that mean exactly? I get it but jeez, clarification please. Why not just say: “‘Obstruction’ means that people are actually prevented from reasonably using the sidewalk – that is, the person filming has asserted exclusive control with respect to the use of such space.”

Review of "Battlestar Galactica: Razor"
There aren't any spoilers here... so feel free to keep reading my take on the movie, which premieres November 24th on SciFi Channel and hits DVD on December 4: » Continue reading "Review of "Battlestar Galactica: Razor""Finally! Twin Peaks Gold Box Edition!
I've been waiting YEARS for this and it has finally happening. Twin Peaks is being released at the end of the month fully restored on DVD, Seasons 1 and 2, along with the American and European pilots! This show was what initially got me and my brother interested in independent film. I remember going to the Pick A Flick Video store in Spartanburg, SC to inquire about "Blue Velvet" only to be referred to the X-rated section. Anyway, watch the trailer for the DVD release here. And read the official press release below. Loads of goodies on the DVD, including deleted scenes, the Saturday Night Live "Twin Peaks" sketch, a Julee Cruise music video, and more. » Continue reading "Finally! I'll be participating in a panel at the IFP Market on Monday September 17, 4-5pm at the Puck Building. We'll be discussing the best ways to approach the press and how to create buzz via your own blog. Taxi Drivers Stage Benefit To Battle Gas Prices
One of my favorite bloggers, Melissa Plaut (New York Hack) is participating in an event this Saturday, August 19th to "help cabbies earn a living wage in the face of the worldwide gas crisis." She will be reading from her upcoming book about what it is like being a twenty something female taxi driver in the Big Apple. Her blog is quite a great read, and very insightful as to what it is like driving a yellow cab. Some excerpts below: "Once the big awards show was over, a very drunk gay cowboy flagged me down. I'm not kidding. He was wearing a cowboy hat, a fringed suede jacket, and cowboy boots. He was so wasted, probably from trying to drink away the pain of losing to "Crash," that he could barely tell me where to go." Two Very Different Songs Of The South
Musicians Protest Knitting Factory music label
Take It To the Bridge, a collective of musicians on the Knitting Factory music label, are protesting it's shabby treatment of them and their work by protesting outside Knitting Factory this Saturday. According to the group: "Instinct Records has simply been incredibly incommunicative and misleading. The destruction of untold amounts of CD stock in the first week of June, and the subsequent inability by so many artists to find out the truth of what happened to their work, stands now as a galvanizing force. While our experiences vary from artist to artist, we recognize this as a good opportunity to come together and finally hold the label accountable for honoring provisions in our contracts that have been neglected for years." When not programming NYC's most popular downtown super 8 film series, curator and filmmaker David Teague puts together special Flicker NYC shows at the lovely, Euro-centric bar in Park Slope, Barbes. The screenings differ from Flicker at the Knitting Factory in that Teague screens vintage super 8 footage around a theme. One particularly odd show on the anniversary of JFK's death was composed of footage about his assassination, a mockumentary renactment, and other film oddities, all accompanied with an eeiry alien soundscape created by a live theremin player. On May 20 he is a repeating a theme from last year, with Super 8 boxing films featuring Joe Louis, Max Baer, Muhammad Ali, and Rocky Marciano. Joel Forrester will be on hand to play live piano accompaniment. The show is free. For more details go to the Flicker NYC or Barbes website. |
