The Onion | Barack Obama Names Alan Moore Official White House Biographer

Oh wow. And I just completed Swamp Thing 21-64. Obama is right. Alan Moore is a genius.

If ONLY this were true.

At a press conference Monday, President Obama announced that he had appointed legendary comic book writer Alan Moore as the official biographer of his time in the White House. “As evidenced by his epic run on Swamp Thing #21–64, Moore’s deft hand with both sociopolitical commentary and metaphysical violence makes him an ideal choice to chronicle my time in office,” Obama said of the author of Watchmen and From Hell, whom he reportedly chose over others on a short list of potential biographers that included Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison, and Bob Woodward.

Morrison and Quitely Return for “Batman and Robin” Comic

If you read last year’s All-Star Superman comic, you can see that writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely really knocked out it the park with that hit series, somehow managing to take the most familiar superhero on the planet and instill a classical sense of what the fuss was about to begin with while also keeping alive the whimsy that makes comics fun.

The team returns for “Batman and Robin,” which sounds like a pretty different take on the character.

In an interview with Comic Book Resource, Morrison says:

We’ve got is a more light-hearted, more spontaneous Batman and a real bad-ass, violent Robin. So I think people are going to enjoy it. It’s a very different dynamic between the two characters.”

First Superman Comic Set To Go for $400,000

IMDb reports that Action Comics #1, the 1938 comic book that features the very first appearance of the world’s most famous superhero, Superman, is expected to bring in a cool $400k at an online auction.

The comic book’s owner, who has not been named, kept the book for 58 years after purchasing it for 35 cents.”

Wow. Talk about a good return on investment.

A rare copy of the comic book which introduced Superman to the world is expected to sell for up to $400,000 (£282,685) at an upcoming auction.

Bidding on the “untouched” copy of Action Comics No. 1 will begin on Friday and continue for two weeks at comicconnect.com. Only 100 copies of the graphic novel are known to exist.

Co-created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, it sold for a meagre 10 cents (£0.07) when it first hit shelves in 1938.

Comic expert Stephen Fishler tells the New York Daily News, “It’s the Holy Grail of comic books. One bidder wanted to trade (me) his Ferrari for the comic book.”

An Adrian Tomine Winter

The graphic novelist Adrian Tomine brings his amazing drawing skills again to bless the latest cover of the New Yorker. I like his work, in particular Tomine’s recent book, “Shortcomings,” which is about a cynical Asian American man in his twenties dealing with his insecurities and immaturity as he struggles with relationships and his own post-graduate aimlessness.

Tomine also created one of my favorite covers for the 2004 New Yorker called “Missed Connections.”

More Comic Book Movies Helmed By Indie Auteurs

watchmen.jpg After the huge financial success of the Spider-man and X-Men movies, it is no surprise that Hollywood has numerous comic book adaptions in the works. Marvel has over a dozen projects planned, and DC is finally getting on the ball with new Batman and Superman movies.

It is great to see that more care than usual is being taken in finding directors that understand the medium and budgets to support the vision. (See the Roger Corman FANTASTIC FOUR and the current CATWOMAN on how to not make a comic book movie.)

With Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) helming the new Superman movie, Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO) shooting BATMAN BEGINS, Robert Rodriguez (EL MARIACHI) with comic book creator Frank Miller on SIN CITY, and Darren Aronofsky (PI) with two projects, WATCHMEN and LONE WOLF AND CUB, Hollywood is entrusting some of the biggest indie film auteurs of the past decade for their big budget, CG heavy summer vehicles. Hopefully this will mean smarter films with a respect for the fans and the source material.
