Catching up with 24

Why is it that TV has gotten so damn addictive? One of my friends had a Lost party last night to celebrate the return of a new season. I have other friends who can't stop talking about Battlestar Galatica, Heroes and The Office. I am obsessed with The Wire despite its long absence. And in that time I've been catching up on Day 6 of 24 on my ipod.

And I'm impressed. There are a lot of repetitve tropes from the previous seasons, and they are definitely trying to out do themselves in terms of spectacle. I even slightly agree with the usual critique of voyerism that is lobbed at the show. But I have to say, it's doing a fantastic job of showing us the different shades of gray that make up our political moment. At the same time as critiquing interment camps as evil and dangerous the show presents us with the teenager next door who turns out to be a terrorist. The machivilian political manipulater goes from pushing unconstitutional methods to standing up for the president and providing moral support. In a show that pits good and evil against each other year after year, with characters switching from good to evil in extremes, it's nice to see the ambivelance it is throwing out their this season. Even superman Jack Bauer starts the season ambilvelant after two years in a Chinese prison. It's fascinating TV and like I said, I am utterly addicted.
