MSNBC loses its backbone

The NY Times reports today that NBC has decided to pull Keith Olberman and Chris Matthews as leads of their political coverage on MSNBC.

"After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage."

I enjoy Olberman. Matthews, on the other hand, I have never really been a huge fan of. But this is the sort of thing that just sickens me. The GOP has mastered both the art of taking umbrage and the art of doublespeak, and in doing so continues to exert an unfair influence on our national media, all the while having their own misinformation mouthpiece on Fox News. It's nothing new.

I though NBC realized that they could grow MSNBC into a profitable Fox news counterpart between choosing Olberman and Matthews to lead their political coverage and bringing Rachel Maddow onboard. Too bad the network brass couldn't show some spine.
