For those that haven't been regularly following the 2012 election, Republican presidential contender Tim Pawlenty has recently seized on the style of trailer pioneered by Jerry Bruckheimer & Don Simpson (and later perfected by Michael Bay) for his campaign ads. By replacing the asteroid/Japanese fighter planes/Decepticon with Barak Obama and Ben Afflek/Bruce Willis/Nicholas Cage with himself, Pawlenty has created ads that leave you wanting to go to the
movies election booth, but he has also exposed the artifice of the trailer. There is the obligatory flag shot and the blaring score and the ticking time bomb and the... well you get the picture. Emotional manipulation, the hollywood way, at its most bare.
