indieWIRE published it's TIFF Skip List today. Among the films included is The Coen Brothers' True Grit starring Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, and Matt Damon. It's another adaptation of the book by Charles Protis, not a remake of the 1969 John Wayne movie. Really, though how are you going to see the new version without comparing it to the old? The originally film was in no way perfect. But Jeff Bridges is no John Wayne, and let's not forget that this is the role that netted the Duke his Oscar. I'm sure the Coen Brothers will make a fine movie. But will anything live up to the iconic moment of John Wayne riding down four men, reigns in his mouth firing a Colt revolver in one hand and a Winchester rifle in the other?

I think not.

how about we compare/contrast the two versions when the new one ACTUALLY has been seen. the coens wouldn't make this movie without knowing they could make the original look weak in comparison.

Relax. Oscar or no, it's not even Wayne's best performance.

If they stay more true to the book as they've said they're going to, it'll focus more on Mattie Ross anyway.

Matt Damon is finally working with the Coen Bros, and that alone will get me through the door.

I think we can balance out Bridges not being the Duke, with Damon not being Campbell.
