Over on the main site they Peter Knegt posted the Academy shortlist Visual Effects. I don't know how the Academy figures these things out, but I felt a rather mixed response when I saw that Hellboy II: The Golden Army was on the list. Watching that movie I felt like the creatures were ripped right out of Pan's Labrynth. Yes, there were more of them. But it was more of the same. Now maybe I am giving that movie a hard time. I never saw Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Empire nor Journey to the Center of the Earth (note to future VFX academy hopefuls: cast Brendan Frasier). I'm sure they too were more of the same. Yet I wouldn't expect more from those movies. Pan's Labrynth opened up a whole new world, and I think that makes me hold those behind it to a higher standard. Keep pushing the boundaries. Nothing is more boring than a visionary who keeps doing the same.
