I recently became a member of the Online Film Critics Society, which polled its members a few weeks back for their favorite movies made by first-time filmmakers. That's a tricky proposition. I'm often predisposed to judge a first-timer on the merits of the potential visible in their work rather than evaluating the piece as a whole, given the rarity of a movie that has the mature qualities of a veteran when the person behind the camera has plenty of growth ahead. So I used flexible judgement on this one, and I'm still fairly content with the results. I mean, of course "Citizen Kane" skyrockets to the top of the list right away. But, to my eyes, "The Night of the Hunter" definitely deserves to sit a few notches ahead of "Reservoir Dogs." So it goes -- until the next voting session.
