CineVegas shorts.

I had a blast at CineVegas this year (big surprise there). In addition to hanging out with old and new friends, I managed to see a lot of unique movies that match the precise vibe the festival goes for. To get more information about the CineVegas features I enjoyed, click here.

A few brief thoughts on a few of the short films from the festival:

The Adventures of Ledo and Ix

It’s the Legend of Zelda reimagined as an existentialist stage play. Well, why can’t we tell these kind of stories with 8-bit graphics? After all, one of the great CineVegas discoveries of 2009, Frankie Latina’s Modus Operandi, was shot on 8mm film.

My Mom Smokes Weed

Amazingly enough, not as gimmicky as the title implies. Clay Liford tells a swift coming-of-age story that’s more than just one goofy joke after another (although there’s plenty of that). It’s not even a stoner comedy, since the main character is the son, not his joint-huffing mother. Instead, we get a compelling flip-flop of the usual generational clash associated with this kind of plot.

Captain Coulier

Like an SNL digital short directed by John Cassevettes from a story by Gene Roddenberry, this totally odd and hilariously abrupt dose of sci-fi strangeness left me at once entertained and very, very confused.
