It's not so surprising that Jim Hoberman and I both chose to reference Jean Baudrillard in our reviews of Full Battle Rattle this week. (Here's his. Here's mine.) The movie really opens itself up to that reading -- but not necessarily in a good way. Don't get me wrong: This bizarrely fascinating documentary about American soldiers training in a fake Iraq (complete with fake Iraqi citizens and fake military funerals) illuminates a lot about the growth of the military mindset in our country and the role of xenophobia in the current overseas incursion. I highly recommend it for anyone remotely interested in the topic. I just wish it took us out of the bubble and explained itself a bit more. That is, I wish it took us to the REAL Iraq. More details in my review.
