I was a latecomer (relatively speaking) to Joe Swanberg's work, having caught Hannah Takes the Stairs at its SXSW premiere in 2007 without knowing what to expect. Since then, I've spilled a little ink about the whole mumblecore mumble-jumble just to keep up with the latest chatter in the film community, but I'm still not entirely sure what to make of his relaxed formalism and meandering use of dialogue -- not to mention plots so elusive they make the average Cassavetes film look like streamlined Hollywood fluff. However, I find that I relate to many of his films (and his web series) like some types of avant-garde cinema: Not always easy to take, but generally tough to forget. At any rate, he's a pretty interesting guy cultivating a pretty interesting career, so I spoke to him on the phone about it for this Stream piece, and the result of our extensive chat is worth your attention.
