Lucas, Fans, and the Future of Movies.

In “The People vs. George Lucas” (see trailer above), Alexandre O. Philippe takes an entertaining look at the original generation of “Star Wars” fans whose outrage over Lucas’ 21st-century updates to the franchise led them to rebel against the creator and the notion that a single idea dominates over all others.

While all recognize that Lucas is the original mastermind of the franchise, few argue that he has lost his grip on it, or with the premise that they have a right to protest his changes. Anything with cultural currency belongs to the world, they believe, regardless of whether the person who put it there feels differently.

“People,” which premiered this week at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, enjoyed a hugely enthusiastic reception during the packed screening at the Paramount Theater. Despite the prevalent anger over Lucas’ wrongheaded tinkering, the movie worked as a major crowd pleaser due to its central argument that a work of art can be preserved by those passionate enough to maintain its existence.
