"The entertainment biz will remember 2008 as the year when global revenues from digital media exceeded revenue generated by movie theaters and homevideo combined," writes Debra Kaufman in an informative report for Variety, echoing some of the ideas I set forth in New York Press for my own assessment of digital distribution advances in 2008.

Okay, so the United States is according to Carmel Group senior analyst Jimmy Schaeffler. Well, no shit. So was rock 'n' roll.

It's important to recognize that the increased visibility of digital distribution doesn't necessarily marginalize theatrical distribution. It's just a different game for different players.
