I couldn't make it through Hollywood historian David Bordwell's self-righteously verbose tome, The Whole Equation, but I can't get enough of that title. Even when not formulaic, movies are formulas. And since I've been watching a whole helluva lot of them this week (getting close to thirty by Friday night), I can't get the numbers out of my head. Here's sampling of some of the cinematic math involved in my own reactions to a few Sundance stand-outs. I reviewed these films in miniaturized form here.
